Mexico president backs extension of supreme court head’s term, sparks backlash Mexico’s Senate on Thursday voted to extend the term of the president of the Supreme Court for an extra two years, a move criticized by opposition lawmakers who called it a bid by the ruling party to strengthen its hold on the country’s institutions. Arturo Zaldivar, who has been publicly supportive of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, was appointed in January 2019 with a term slated to end on Dec. 31, 2022. Official: SEC working with CBN on cryptocurrency regulation Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) says it is working with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for better understanding and regulation of cryptocurrencies in the country. The Director-General, SEC, Lamido Yuguda, said this at the 2021 first post-Capital Market Committee (CMC) virtual news conference. Yuguda said the commission was in discussion with the CBN for a better understanding and regulation of the crypto assets. Safin De Coque: I’m glad people still celebrate my father Safin De Coque, one of the sons of the late legendary highlife singer, Oliver De Coque, has expressed joy that people still celebrate his father who died on June 20, 2008, at the age of 61. Celebrating his 74th posthumous birthday, Google honoured the legendary guitarist with a Google Doodle. Reacting to the gesture, Safin De Coque, in a chat with newsmen, noted that the family was happy that their father was being celebrated even years after his death. “Personally, I feel happy that people are still celebrating my father even though he had died. Minister apologises for nationwide power outage The Minister of Power, Engineer Sale Mamman has apologised to Nigerians over the recent power outage experienced across the country. In a statement released on Thursday, Mamman said he regrets the situation and difficulty it has brought to Nigerians. According to Mamman, the problem was caused by the breakdown of some National Integrated Power Plants supplying electricity to the national grid.
